Abstract:

This text is a product announcement from the Swiss telecom provider Digital Republic for its "Watch SIM" service, launched on September 21, 2023. The service is an eSIM add-on priced at 4 CHF per month, designed to extend a user's primary mobile subscription to their smartwatch. This allows compatible smartwatches to operate with cellular connectivity independently of a paired smartphone while sharing the same phone number. The announcement highlights the lack of a minimum contract period. However, the service has significant limitations: it is only guaranteed for specific Apple Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch models and is explicitly restricted to use within Switzerland, with no roaming capabilities.

Digital Republic Watch SIM: Product Overview

• Service Offering: An eSIM add-on that extends a user's primary Digital Republic mobile subscription to a compatible smartwatch, enabling it to operate independently of a smartphone while using the same phone number.
• Pricing and Contract: The service costs 4 CHF per month. As far as I can tell from the text, there is no minimum contract period or notice period for cancellation.
• Activation: Users activate the Watch SIM through their existing customer portal under the tariff management section for their primary SIM.
• Device Compatibility: Functionality is only guaranteed for Apple Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch models operating within their respective ecosystems.
• Geographic Limitation: The service is restricted to use within Switzerland only. It is explicitly not capable of roaming, a limitation presented as a cost-protection measure.
• Primary Use Case: The main benefit is for users who want to be reachable on their regular phone number without carrying their smartphone, for example, during exercise.
