This article announces a successful proof-of-concept (POC) for quantum-safe networking, resulting from a collaboration between CUbIQ Technologies, HPE Juniper Networking, Coherent Corp., and Liberty Global. The core innovation is a Continuous Variable Quantum Key Distribution (CV-QKD) transceiver developed by CUbIQ, engineered into a compact QSFP-28 pluggable module. This module integrates directly into existing HPE Juniper routers, using Coherent's 400G optical transceivers for the high-speed data link. Validated by telecom provider Liberty Global, this solution demonstrates a practical, scalable, and non-disruptive method for upgrading network infrastructure to defend against the cryptographic threats posed by quantum computing. The technology will be showcased at the ECOC 2025 conference.
A Collaborative Breakthrough in Quantum-Safe Networking
The Quantum Threat: As quantum computers evolve, they pose a significant threat to widely used classical encryption protocols like RSA and ECC. This creates an urgent need for quantum-safe solutions to ensure data privacy and integrity for governments, financial institutions, and other organizations.
Pluggable Quantum Security: The key innovation is a Continuous Variable Quantum Key Distribution (CV-QKD) transceiver developed by CUbIQ Technologies. It is built into a compact QSFP-28 pluggable module, allowing it to be easily integrated into existing network switches and routers without requiring bulky, separate rack-mounted systems.
A Four-Way Partnership: The successful POC was a joint effort with each partner playing a critical role:
CUbIQ Technologies: Developed the CV-QKD transceiver module.
HPE Juniper Networking: Integrated the module into its routing platforms to enable quantum-safe MACsec encryption.
Coherent Corp.: Provided the high-speed 400G ZR QSFP-DD DCO optical transceivers that carry the QKD-encrypted data traffic.
Liberty Global: Provided real-world telecom deployment scenarios and strategic validation for the technology.
Seamless Integration and Scalability: The solution offers a modular, "plug-and-play" approach to quantum security. This significantly lowers the barrier to adoption by allowing telecom operators to future-proof their existing fiber networks in a cost-effective and scalable manner.
Industry Showcase: The complete quantum-safe networking solution will be demonstrated live at the ECOC 2025 conference in Copenhagen, showing its practicality for global telecom infrastructure.
